TX Sen. Leticia Van De Putte hosted a Human Trafficking Health Summit on Nat'l Human Trafficking Awareness Day. Many health care providers, law enforcement, and social services presented on 4 different panels to the audience. The goal of the summit was to increase awareness among health care professionals of human trafficking. Statistics show that 1 in 3 victims come into contact with a health care professional while they are being trafficked. Increasing awareness will allow health care professionals who come into contact with victims to take the proper steps to getting them out of the cycle of trafficking and restoring their lives. In addition, a human trafficking survivor bravely shared her story about being trafficked, and the many missed opportunities there were to receive help from health care providers who did not question her situation. Training health care professionals to join the fight against human trafficking and identifying victims is a positive step for the problem of trafficking.
